Al-Pals,
Just for the record it may be important to mention
the other side of the Secret Coin. I never kept a
secret. My darn mouth would spout off anything that
came into my noggin. It didn't matter to whom or
about what, it just came out.
My father shut me up. "If I say one more word..."
That sort of thing to where I learned not to talk
at all. Not keeping secrets (though practically
I suppose the secrets were kept.) Keeping quiet.
The need to express being dominant, I painted and
drew. I'm still very good at it. Yes, I probably
was born with the necessary talent, but the situation
of my youth furthered it as if it were a favored mentor.
Somewhere in my early thirties I started talking too
darn much. My wife is used to it. My kids can't stand
it (though now well into their twenties and thirties
they've learned to tolerate it.) My grand-kids LOVE IT!!!
A big person who is willing to talk to them! Wow...
I know this talking thing shows up in my f2f meetings.
Too-long shares. You know the drill. And here at ASP
the words just flow unabated. But there's a story behind
everything. Not a secret story, just a logical explanation
when all the facts are bared.
It wouldn't surprise me at all if most of our individual
fears and what we may call "character defects" are little
different than my long silence and current talkativeness -
simply child-invented responses to the overwhelming power
of the big people in our young lives. If so, though I didn't
cause it nor can I change the past, perhaps, if I choose,
I could "cure" it by looking at it with big person eyes.
For now, though, I'm still talking. I enjoy it too much
to quit :-)
(((Hugs)))
Jerry
