[Businessmtg] Webmaster Job Description

Hi Laura,

1. Term of service. Yes, the term is 3 years. All of the officers started
out on the same date 5 years ago when I transferred the ownership &
operation of ASP to ASP itself and the new trusted servants in May 2006. We
began the rotation of those officers at about the 3 year mark, however it
has taken us about 2 years to get to the Webmaster position. As a result,
both Anne & Jerry served well beyond the stated term.

2. The Web Master is responsible for maintaining the HTML pages on the
server. The provider maintains the server hardware as well as the server
OS.

3. We do not have any plans on upgrading the ASP site style-wise. That
does not preclude the possibility of doing so. However, if a new Web Master
wanted to change the style of the web site, the appropriate thing to do
would be to present the ideas to the Steering Committee for discussion &
consensus, and possibly to the Business Meeting. Historically, the Web
Master has been given considerable latitude regarding style, etc. however
the Web Master also works closely with the other officers on the Steering
Committee so everyone is aware of what's going on.

Some of the content is definitely static. For example, the pages on the
founding principles & policies of ASP are the same as when I first posted
them 15+ years ago. The content on other pages is updated as needed. For
example, the list of trusted servants, Daily Chairs, Motions of the Business
Meeting are updated as needed.

ASP rents a complete server and both the web site and mailing list are run
off that one machine. The Web Master maintains the web site and the List
Administrator is responsible for maintaining the mailing list. The List
Administrator has the ultimate responsibility for the server operation, both
web site and mailing list server, so the List Administrator does have full
access to the web site side of the server - think of the LA as the Web
Master's alternate. Similarly, the Secretary is the first Alternate to the
List Administrator and should be trained, etc by the LA on everything.

The Web Master is the primary source of information to non-member of ASP
because it is the Web Master that has literal control of the web site.
Since we give the Web Master considerable latitude with the development of
the web site, the web site reflects the personality and program of the Web
Master. For the first 10 years the web site reflected my personality and
program. During the last 5 years Anne has added some pages, updated some
others and has brought her own personality and program to the web site in
many subtle ways. This is as it should be.

Hopefully, this answers your questions.

Hugs,
Steve

I have some questions about the post, but I thought I would make them
"public" so that others can "hear" the answers:

1. How long is the term of service? The description would indicate it's a
three year, but Anne has been doing service for 5? (Thanks Anne!)
2. Is the webmaster responsible for maintaining anything other than the
files on the server? Like upgrading software, patching, OS, things like
that?
3. Is the web site static, or are there upgrades planned? (Other than the
content of the HTML pages)
4. Can someone explain what is involved with maintaining the "mailing list
server site"?

Can someone explain what the duties are on the webmaster role found at
http://www.asp-afg.org/ASP/nbm/structure.htm? I find the duties of the other
positions easy to understand, but the webmaster one is not as clear. I don't
understand how the webmaster is the primary source of information for ASP to
non-members?

Thanks,
Laura M
