[Businessmtg] webmaster position

Jane,
I'm going to try to respond to both of your emails.
Protocol:
The protocol is pretty simple. There are 6 phases to the process:
1. Inquiry and Q&A. This phase is rather informal. Members inquire about the
position. The same sort of questions that you're asking now.
2. ASP member(s) makes themselves available for the position. This phase has
a specific protocol.
2.a. The member that would like to make themselves available for the
position goes to the ASP website and downloads the "Resume Form". It is
available in 3 different formats at http://www.asp-afg.org/ASP/nbm/index.htm
2.b. The member completes the Resume Form and emails it to the Secretary,
the Chair of the Business Meeting. That's Melanie
quittakingitpersonally at gmail.com
3. The Secretary will compile and forward the resume(s) received and forward
them to the ASP members attending the Business Meeting, and announce a time
frame for review and questions. We have to be careful during this phase to
keep questions appropriate, focusing on the principles and not the
personalities. Generally, this is not a problem - I'm just reminding folks
because sometimes Al-Anons can behave like . . . well, Al-Anons. :-)
4. The Secretary will announce that the discussion period is closed and it
is time to vote (take a poll of the ASP members present in the Business
Meeting). At that point, discussion is closed and the Secretary will make
adjustments to the server that will actually prevent people from posting
questions or comments. The Secretary will also announce the time frame for
the polling.
5. The Web Master will create a polling page on the Web Site and post a
message to the Business Meeting describing the poll and provide a link to
the polling page.
6. At the end of the polling period, the Secretary will announce the results
of the vote/poll to the Business Meeting, and as well as the recovery
meeting.
Now on to your other questions - NOTE: my responses are designed to answer
the questions for those that might not understand anything about being a Web
Master.
1. I don't see any issues with using public WiFi.
2. ASP uses HTML software program called Microsoft Expression Web. The name
might be slightly different now as I think MS changed the name a bit. I'll
refer to it as MSEW in this note. Naturally, MSEW runs on Windows. MSEW is a
WSYWIG HTML editor. HTML is the name of the programming language that web
sites use - in other words, web sites are written in HTML code. A WSYWIG
HTML editor is sort of like Microsoft Word in that it gives the programmer a
tool to write with that makes the code look like the finished product on the
screen. Trust me, this is sooooo much easier than when I started ASP 18
years ago.
Note: it is possible to write HTML with other tools. However we/I discourage
this because it can create problems for future Web Masters. OTOH, there is
nothing wrong with making minor edits of the text within a web page with
some other tool, as long as the other code embedded in the page is left
alone, then uploading the updated web page. This technique would allow for
making updates and other smallish changes to the site without using MSEW -
say via a Mac or tablet.
3. New and updated web pages are then uploaded from the Web Master's
computer via an FTP program (File Transfer Protocol). This is amazingly easy
and can be done from pretty much any computer with an FTP program. I use a
program called FileZilla which is very powerful, very easy to use and free.
:-)
4. How much time is involved? For the most part, very little. The web site
is quite stable. The most routine work involves updating pages with the
current Treasurer's Report, copies of Business Meeting motions and updates
to the Trusted Servant and Daily Chair assignment pages. I'd say less than
an hour a week, or perhaps even less than an hour a month the majority of
the time.
OTOH, there is a learning curve to the job, which is likely to take more
time. How much more time is going to depend not just on the individual's
abilities to do the job, but also on their personal interest in delving into
the job more than is required.
The other side of the job is participation in the Steering Committee. This
is completely ad hoc. ASP tends to cruise along just fine 99.8% of the time
without any intervention by the Steering Committee. That other 0.2% may
require 15 minutes, or it may require several hours to deal with.
Any more questions? Fire away!
Hugs,
Steve

Subject: [Businessmtg] webmaster position
I have attended several of these meetings and am still perplexed as to
proper protocol, but let me just put it out there that unless someone else
steps forward, I might be interested in the webmaster position. My obstacles
are that I have to use public wifi and am only online doing personal things
for a few hours per week. I can email from my little flip phone but not do
much else.
I am very good with software in general and helped to design a website with
my partner, so I have a bit of experience and am a quick study. I've also
been in ASP for several years now.
Pardon me if I violated protocol but just wanted to put that out there!
Hugs!
