Committing to service and fulfilling that commitment has been integral 
within my own recovery.  Without having made that commitment I'm not 
positive I would have stuck around as long as I have.  I take my 
commitments to other people far more seriously than I take the 
commitment to myself (character defect right there) so the upside to 
having served as greeter chair and as a part of the steering committee 
for the last nearly 3 years is that it has forced me to continue along 
the path of recovery.

If you've ever considered service and have perhaps felt a little fear at 
the idea, I can't say enough about how great it feels to know you've 
played a tiny role in the recovery of another.  The beauty is when we 
serve, even imperfectly, on the front end you're helping someone else 
but by proxy it helps you.
