I would like to clarify my reluctance to create a volunteer sponsor list.
First and foremost, I would like to make clear that not putting my name on such a list does not, in any way, mean I am unwilling to sponsor.
Referring to the free pamphlet (P-31) "Sponsorship, What It's All About", I would like to quote selected sections.
Page 4, Choosing a Sponsor states, "Sponsorship is about trust. It is about learning to reach out in a positive way, to be willing to ask for help ..............."
Page 5, How Do I Choose a Sponsor? "Asking someone to be our Sponsor is part of our own personal recovery in Al-Anon, or Alateen. Being too shy or too proud to do so could mean the difference between finding a new life in the program or returning to misery and loneliness. We look for someone who 'has what we want' and with whom we feel comfortable...........Ultimately, a Sponsor relationship is one of choice; we feel comfortable with a particular member, and ask that person to act as a Sponsor."
Page 7, How Do I Become a Sponsor? "Most Sponsors do not volunteer for the job; they wait to be asked, recognizing that part of another member's personal recovery depends upon a willingness to reach out for help. Some of us didn't decide we were ready until someone asked us."
