Someone mentioned that the Steering Committee is working to revise the welcome letters issued by the greeters. As former greeter chair, I have to say I'm grateful for that action. They are rather cumbersome. I've often thought they could be whittled down and still include the same information. We all know that most newcomers do not take the time to read and digest complex instructions and wordy introductions. Instead they skim it, or skip it altogether.
If we are consistently getting complaints from newbies that the emails are overwhelming, then we ought to be SUPER clear in the beginning that there is no expectation of reading every single thing that comes to one's inbox as well as giving realistic numbers of emails one could expect. I like the idea of offering them a choice to attend a newcomers meeting initially, as well.
Look, I'm a big proponent of personal responsibility and struggle a bit with the idea that we must continue to make things easier for other people. Part of me feels like they have to walk the path of others before them and if we make it too easy and take away all growing pains then we are stunting their growth in program. The other part of me sees the wisdom in simplifying the process a bit so as to minimize confusion and allow a new person to fairly quickly jump on in.
Apryl :)
