I think the OT shares on ASP are few enough that we don't need a separate "area" for them. I also agree that unless such an area is staffed pretty vigilantly with "old timers" it could devolve into advice and pity. 

Off topic shares occur at least once in each of my F2F meetings, and almost exclusively with newcomers. ... or someone in crisis. No one minds, and that person is welcomed with hugs and ESH (if asked for) after the meeting. 

IMO the only time it becomes problematic is if a person posts nothing but OT. But I've noticed the list administrators have been on top of things with gentle reminders.
