Good Morning,
LOVE Jerry's idea. When I first came into program, I couldn't obtain enough
information, first looking to "fix" my daughter's addiction, then learning
it was me that needed to be "fixed".

Biz-Pals,
I've long thought that ASP could better serve newcomers. In the past things
like temporary sponsor lists, beginners' meetings, OT meetings, etc. have
been discussed or mentioned in Business Meetings and it doesn't hurt to
broach these topics from time to time; people and times change and one day
any or all of these ideas may fit the membership's needs.
The one thing which may help newcomers the most, and which to my
recollection has never come up, is some version of a First Step "meeting".
The logistics of running a separate meeting would be much the same as for
this OT meeting, so to my mind this wouldn't work in a separate meeting
format either.
What could easily work would be an additional page, linked to on our member
page or home page (or both) called something like 'Our First Steps' where a
collection of our 1st Step stories would be kept for newcomers to read
through. Heck, it would be good for long timers, too. Any willing member
could compose their story and submit it for posting. Perhaps some modest
control would be in order for length, editing permission for grammar and
language (thinking particularly of profanity), or for other reasons related
to keeping the stories on our website from shocking folk's too much.
The greatest advantages I can see from such a volume would be providing
newcomers with something akin to their very own 1st Step Meeting full of our
stories and ESH - something all f2f members get, if on our home page a
resource for interested non-members to gain insight and feel they would be
at home here in ASP, and a place where every ASP member could go to be
reminded of the power of this disease, but the greater power of personal
recovery.
...and we could have literally hundreds of stories there if we wished
without worrying about time like in f2f meetings - so perhaps something we
can do better than f2f!
"Hi, my name is Jerry. Welcome to Al-Anon and ASP.
My wife is an alcoholic. Our life wasn't always miserable. We started out,
like most couples, with indescribable love for one another and endless
dreams of the glorious future we would share together. Wonderful stuff...,
blah, blah, blah..., but there came a day about six years later when it
became clear that she had a drinking problem, etc., etc......"
I can't think of any better way to welcome a newcomer than with our stories.
