When I was greeter chair the server went through a period where it was not playing nice with certain email hosts like AOL (if memory serves). At some point discussion amongst the SC landed us around the idea the gmail seemed to place nice with the server. The greeter letter was updated to "suggest" that an email provider such as gmail worked better than known offenders AOL and I think it was Yahoo but I could be wrong. We should not be requiring anything. 

This is all from memory though.
