>From Anne O.: Hi Bubbe,

We actually list ourselves as a community group on the IRS paperwork (or
something like that)I am guessing that is what the groups you are involved
with do too. Non profit status requires some legal support. When I was
treasurer and opened up the bank account, the people’s whose names were to
appear on the account needed to be present. The LA at that time was in
Chicago and I was in Massachusetts, so getting her on the account wasn’t
feasible. As the world continues to change so do banking and pay pal rules.
Online groups that have no brick and mortar counterpart are subject to
greater scrutiny and different laws.

Jerry’s outline of the time commitment is a good estimate. And no you don’t
need an accounting background. And of course my account of nonprofit
status is anecdotal based on what I experienced several years ago.

Hugs,

To All,

BJ: What I have experienced, as recently as last week OL, is that it only
takes my word and ID should they ask that we are affiliated with a
non-profit.

It used to depend on the amount of money kept on hand as to what
"documents" a bank needed. For Al-Anon groups that amount doesn't come
anywhere near the set amount which I can't remember right now.

In the past I have had to provide a valid Driver's License (picture ID) and
possibly a credit card. No big deal. I have done this by first speaking
to the bank person in person and faxing or copying my ID info to him/her.
Again, no big deal and this was from several states away from me.

I just fail to understand why ASP has to be so particular and strict as to
be legally designated as a non-profit and, consequently, what the costs of
that legal act costs. We are part of Al-Anon Family Groups, Inc. which
means we are a non-profit.

Maybe ASP's attorney can explain this dilemma. I would ask my ex- (who was
an attorney0) but he died last year due to wet brain insanity. ;-)
