Hi everyone, I hope this is the correct way to go about sharing.
From service work I’ve done in the past, my thoughts are service work is meant to keep members coming back. It’s more about what it does for us then to get jobs done. Yes, of course we need positions filled and we do have obligations. But at the same time, sponsors encourage us to help out because they want us to keep coming and give back what was given to us.
I don’t see how 3,6,12,15, etc. months makes a difference. We have no way of knowing what each person does in regards to their personal al - Anon work. To say it could be hard for someone new to manage the service plus the regular meetings - how do we know? How do we know maybe that service position is what holds them accountable and gives them the push to keep coming?
Not to mention, there’s a lot of people who want to help out and have 20+ years in al - Anon, just maybe not in this particular group. They would be great at helping out, but because they don’t have 6 months or a year they’re told no.
There’s a lot that goes into the behind the scenes service work, I know. But the only way to find out if people can do it is to give them a chance. This is where the traditions come into play, everyone deserves a chance and we have to go off the trust system here. If someone makes a mistake oh well, I bet everyone in this business meeting has messed up in their service work at least once. It’s OK, that’s how we learn.
Obviously how it’s been going isn’t working or we wouldn’t be having this discussion right now. If we keep doing the same thing over and over again chances are it’s not going to improve. Why not try something different? We can always go back if it doesn’t work out.
Thanks for letting me share,
Anna
