All,
We should note that on our (approved) website, FAQ section, we already
say that ASP service requires just six months of ASP participation.
While too short for our elected positions in my opinion and experience,
it seems there was an administrative decision to elevate the service
requirement [for greeter and topic chair] from six month's
participation to one year. Could someone please relate the
input/reasoning which prompted this change? I think it would help us
understand why one year was chosen over six months.
Also, if the decision to bump up the service requirement was then
appropriate at an administrative level, why does changing that decision
now require a group conscience? Couldn't it be done more simply
administratively? By stating that this administrative decision requires
a group conscience to alter it [7-day discussion minimum, substantial
unanimity found, motion made, 2nd'ed, 7-day voting period] we are
setting a precedent which could affect all future administrative
decisions, removing authorities given to our trusted servants so they
can perform the duties we expect of them in a timely fashion - and
requiring the Business Meeting to act on every minor business decision
that comes up. The pace of ASP's Business Meeting decision process would
not allow efficient group management.
I lean heavily in favor of the Greeter Chair, with Steering Committee
approval, being able to make service participation requirement changes
for Greeters as the future need to fill these positions demands. Same
goes for Topic Chairs.
