Biz-Pals,
I started out in favor of holding to a 1-year requirement of active ASP participation in order to serve as an ASP greeter. Part of my reasoning was that the more experience and ASP knowledge a greeter had the better job they could do for the group. But I have recently changed my position on our greeter requirements for a combination of the following reasons:
1) Al-Anon's Concept 3 suggests that the right of decision makes for effective leadership. Anne O., our Greeter Chair suggested and supported moving to a six-month ASP participation requirement. She is in a position to best know whether this requirement will work for our fellowship so I tend to lean toward her judgement.
2) Concept 4 suggests that participation is the key to harmony. Six months of active ASP participation requirement will likely make participation in ASP service more available to more members.
3) Concept 9 suggests that good personal leadership is necessary. ASP service as a greeter contributes to the growth of participating ASP members helping them to gain those leadership skills they will need should they later stand for service in an ASP officer position.
4) Concept 10 suggests that service responsibility is balanced by carefully defined service authority. ASP's greeter instructions and Greeter Chair oversight define and supervise greeter performance which assures me that a six-month ASP participation requirement is not likely to harm ASP or the newcomers they welcome.
I speak in favor of Motion #20,"I move that ASP members become eligible to serve as greeters once they have a minimum of six (6) months of active ASP participation."
