[Businessmtg] finding a secretary and treasurer

Hi All,
I've been thinking about this situation for months now. The reality is
that in order to qualify for these two positions, one has to have had
a minimum of one year's active membership in ASP AND THEN another
year's service as either a greeter or two rounds of topic meeting
chairs. In addition, my experience of attending business meetings for
over a year now is that it is impossible to get a positive vote on any
recommendation, so changes in these requirements are not likely to
change. I've found myself repeatedly asking myself what I can and
cannot change about this situation and the reality is that there is
nothing that I can personally do at this time to change this dilemma.

In 6 months after I complete another 6 months of being a greeter
(thereby meeting the qualifications), if the treasurer position is
still open, I would agree to apply again for that position.

In the meantime, I've come up with two more ideas.

The first idea is dependent on the answer to a question. Does ASP have
a policy against having an acting secretary or treasurer until a
member who is in the process of completing the required service has
completed that requirement? If there is no policy prohibiting this
kind of "acting" position, I think that it should be considered.

The second idea involved work that can only be completed by the
current steering committee. There currently must be only a dozen or
two members who have meet the required service commitment to volunteer
for either of these two positions. With such a short list, perhaps it
is time for the steering committee to contact these few members and
speak with them individually. It appears to me that numerous of the
individuals who do quality don't regularly attend the business
meetings and might not even understand our current need. If all the
members from this short list are not interested then perhaps we need
to table this discussion until we have a larger potential pool of
members who might be interested. Instead, perhaps we need to re-double
our efforts into getting a few more people qualified by daily
mentioning in our meeting introduction the importance of service and
how we need daily chairs and a new greeter with 1 or more year's of
ASP membership.

These are just my newest thoughts on how we might go about solving
this current very difficult situation.

Thanks for reading this.

Mary A.
