Hi, All,
Because as List Administrator I'm the one who manages the unsubscribing I'll answer this question.
First off, we do not keep detailed statistics on folks who choose to leave ASP. Members are free to go for whatever reason just as they are in face-to-face meetings. Those who leave are invited to send a note relating why thy left - but most who leave do not. Of those who do respond the reason is almost unanimously the shear volume of emails. One extrapolates that into believing that nearly all who leave do so for that reason. Of course there are those rare ones who find they don't need Al-Anon any more because somebody sobered up...
Our current membership is at 2,976 subscribed members. That number has been growing steadily since we enacted the simpler method of subscribing. It is a net number meaning it reflects both gains and losses.
I've taken the last three days as a sample of unsubscriptions:
Total Unsubscribed _______________________ 25
~ Self-Unsubscribed using ASP instructions: 13
~ Unsubscribed by LA at member request: 12
[5 addressed to la at asp-afg.org / 6 addressed to Reply All / 1 addressed to my personal email address]
As you can see only about half successfully self-unsubscribe. Most who request that I unsubscribe them say that they first tried to unsubscribe using ASP's instructions but with no success - however about half of those who contact me at la at asp-afg.org actually were successful. I find that out when I go to unsubscribe them and get feedback that they are no longer members. I presume there is some small delay between their initial request and our server unsubscribing them - and being impatient they turn to the LA to fix what they see as a problem - sometimes angrily with multiple demands one after naother. I suspect that ratio also applies to the Reply All and other requests for assistance.
For the record it's a LOT simpler for me to go ahead and unsubscribe them than get into an email exchange with each individual to train them how to do it themselves. They've already given up on our instructions. I might even suggest that we create an ASP email address [unsubscribe at asp-afg.org] and get rid of the self-unsubscribing all together with the LA (or even the Greeter Chair) unsubscribing them. My past recommendations that we look into creating a simple "push button" method to self-unsubscribe haven't been addressed - it may not be possible.
In service,
Jerry
