Hi Lynne,
Thanks for your input and queries and for sending a working link. We do
only discuss one agenda item at a time so I will address your queries in
terms of our topic at hand, Motion 4. ASP policy is that members only
qualify for Steering Committee (SC) service positions if they have had 1
year of prior service in a non-SC position. Currently, someone either has
to be a greeter (1 year position) or a 6 month topic chair twice in order
to meet that criteria. The pool of ASP members who meet the minimum
criteria and are willing to serve is small. Motion 4 would add another
opportunity for non-SC service at ASP. There are other obstacles to
serving in SC positions but the SC consensus is that adding an additional
service non-SC position should facilitate increasing the candidate pool. In
addition, the position of the proposed service position of recording
secretary would also be a nice entry level position to learn what is
involved in being ASP secretary. We just recently had a similar situation
when Kelley, who was a greeter, became the greeter chair. It is a natural
progress to move to an increased level of service. It will take a while to
fill our vacant SC positions, but we feel this is a step in the right
direction.
