[Businessmtg] FW: Possible amendment for the current motion

Hi Anne K.,
You are correct that we are in Parliamentary mode now, not KBDM mode.
I'll try to be clearer this time.
The current topic is the motion, aka the wording of the motion. You made a legitimate request to add a clause to the motion directing the Steering Committee to process the incorporation should I be unable to do so. I haven't heard any objection, though I would prefer members speaking up and confirming a consensus exists to include this wordsmithing in the motion. In other words, I don't believe that a motion to amend the original motion is necessary - just a consensus of the members speaking favorably on the amendment. The issue with requiring a motion to amend is that would then require a vote on the amendment, which means a week just to vote on the amendment. While that might be technically correct following a strict interpretation of Robert's Rules of Order, I noted that Al-Anon does not follow Robert's Rules of Order, especially strict interpretations.
Does that make sense?
If so, I would appreciate it if the members spoke up.
Love and SERENITY,
Steve

It occurred to me that since we are not in the KDBM process, perhaps we do not have to wait for consensus, but rather put the motion out on the floor. . Also, I am not clear on when this discussion portion closes since I believe the email regarding the discussion of the motion was for "a few days", and I do not want to miss my opportunity to make a motion regarding the amendment.

Therefore,

I believe per parliamentary procedure, discussion can still occur; and a second of the motion would be required in order to vote on the amended motion.

Thank you
Anne K

Hi Anne K.,
My understanding of the process is that once the motion has been seconded, the motion belongs to the group, and no longer belongs to the mover and seconder. Therefore, the group has the say on whether a motion is amended or not. This makes sense in Al-Anon because it prevents a situation wherein just one or two people could control what the process and potentially the outcome.
In other words, a consensus of pro or con comments on the amended motion will define the motion that we vote on.
My personal take is that while I don't believe the amendment is necessary, it certainly does no harm and would make a number of members more comfortable with the motion.
Love and SERENITY,
Steve

Thank you.

Procedure question - After discussion, if there is consensus supporting the amendment that you as meeting chair have identified, does the person who originally made the notion formally accept the amendment and revise their motion? Then is there a new second or does the person who seconded originally ‘Re-second’?
