Biz-Pals,
A minute to encourage those who are currently qualified for service, but don't feel ready to commit. I can't say I was ever without some degree of doubt when I have stood for my various ASP service positions.
Treasurer
When ASP moved from Steve's ownership to Group ownership and responsibility I stood for Treasurer with no related experience other than keeping my own checkbook balanced and my bills paid. Though I was your treasurer for longer than I anticipated I enjoyed the process very much. Collecting the mail (receiving super notes along with the donations,) making deposits, and monthly reports. All easy work. I recommend it highly.
At-Large Steering Committee Position
Not a lot about this position is talked about. The purpose is to have more input in the Steering Committee from different perspectives. These two positions, with only a six-month term if I recollect properly, would give currently qualified members who are unsure if holding other Steering Committee positions might be too demanding the chance to see what SC membership is like while offering their own experience, strength, and hope to ongoing Steering Committee discussions. I found my one term as an At-Large SC member interesting and productive.
ASP List Administrator
At a time when no one else was willing to serve as List Administrator I became willing to give it go. I was not then nor am I now a techy guy so it took a lot of adapting to unfamiliar territories. When a vacancy in the Secretary position required that I assume those duties as well I was quickly over my capacity to maintain my serenity while attempting to do what for me was too much. I will admit some of my personal deficits and some private matters were part of my need to step down six or so months short of fulfilling my three-year term. That said, I did learn some important lessons about myself and did contribute in the process.
Service is an important element of personal recovery. I recommend stepping up when opportunities arise, and rotating out when service terms run out. Balance is part of recovery, too.
I wish you well should you be considering any Al-Anon or ASP service positions.
In service,
Jerry
