Thank you Lynne for providing this list of question for comments, I think
it is helping to explore these other options more in depth and see others
ideas! :)
1. There is support for reducing the previous ASP service for elected
trusted servants from 1 year to 6 months, although some would prefer the
List Admin, Secretary or Treasurer to still have 1 year prior ASP service.
***Question for further discussion: Why would people be in favor of 1 year
Vs 6 months for specific positions?
I assume the reasoning is that these particular positions require a better
understanding of how ASP functions. The general members and the greeter
chair it seems would be okay with less time served. They could then
potentially fulfill the "1 year year commitment SC positions" after 6 mos
of general service on the SC learning the ropes.
2. There is support for including other Al anon service as part of the
service requirement in addition to or in lieu of time at ASP (multiple
combinations have been suggested).
***Question for further discussion: Why was prior Al anon service not
originally part of the requirements for ASP elected trusted servants? What
are the pros and cons of this?
While ASP is a unique meeting type with more structure (it's incorporated!)
I think it is important to honor the Al-Anon program that is the basis of
the group. I came to ASP having served as an F2F intergroup rep in Al-Anon
for a year, which familiarized me with how the Al-Anon larger organization
works. I think I could have stepped into a daily chair position sooner than
one year having F2F meeting learning (I remember 1 year being the
requirment when I joined). Glad to hear it is 6 months!
3. There is a suggestion to count participation in the business meeting
toward the ASP service requirement for elected trusted servants.
***Question for discussion: Has this been considered previously? What are
the pros and cons of this?
Others have echoed what I feel, which is that actively participating
(making suggestions, commenting on agenda items, voting) in the business
meetings has taught me much about how ASP was founded and functions -I've
been prompted to look at the treasury ledgers, the motions and more. Since
the business meetings open with a list of participants and I assume the
interactions/shares via email, are on the server, it should be fairly easy
to verify participation. It also shows a level of commitment to the ASP
meeting and is in itself an act of service to the meeting.
4. There is concern that the 3 year commitment for elected trusted servants
is too long and could put off prospective people who might otherwise apply.
***Question for further discussion: What is the reason for the 3 year
commitment and what are the pros and cons of lowering this?
Many have commented on the 3 year length of service being an issue. 2 years
seems like enough time to learn, function and transition a new person. Then
hopefully, if they wish to contine a third year, then they could apply for
the third.
5. There is a suggestion to lower the ASP participation requirements for
the appointed positions to allow a possible faster path to service as an
elected trusted servant.
***Question for further discussion: I think there might be conflicting
guidelines for this between 1 year and 6 months. Could someone who has been
here for a long time offer some clarity?
I believe we have concluded via the FAQs that 6 months is the suggestion
not one year.
