[Businessmtg] Suggestion for a minor change to the motion

All,

I think Steve's email (below) has hit upon a solution.

Because "recommend" to many has the connotation of favored support, his last sentence includes a substitute word "present" ["...the SC could present...members to the BM for consideration"]

If the words 'recommend' and 'recommended' were replaced with 'present' and 'presented' in the motion, the SC's intent, as now explained, would get rid of the current and potential for future confusion and I'd easily support such an amended motion.

I ask, please, that the member who made the current motion amend their motion so that the 3rd and 4th bullet points read:

* That the SC may present such candidates to the BM by unanimous vote of the SC,
* That candidates presented by the SC may not meet ASP requirements for prior membership or service,

...or in words to that effect.

Simple solutions seem to often be the best.

SOLICIT - intransitive verb

I'd suggest choosing Door #1.

The Steering Committee has no control over when members do stuff, including
volunteering for service.  As a result, it is entirely possible that the SC
could be in the midst of vetting a less-than-qualified member when a fully
qualified member submits a resume.  If we believe that the "
less-than-qualified" member is worth recommending to the BM, then why would
we not do exactly that. So, yes, it is possible that the SC could present
two members to the BM for consideration.

   I confess I am so confused right now regarding the motion on the floor,
   that I am unable to make an `informed' decision.  I thought I
   understood in the beginning that the Steering Committee was asking for
   permission to vet a applicant who had less than ASP stated service
   requirements in cases where positions have remained vacant.

   I thought this was hoped to be a temporary solution to an existing
   problem/need.


   I assumed that if a person who fit the qualifications applied for a
   position, then this `soliciting' would not apply.  (I cannot explain
   why the word `solicit' bothers me so much, and that is not part of the
   discussion - just a personal comment.)


   Now I'm getting the impression that the SC may submit a name they have
   vetted who does not meet the requirements fully, even though a person
   who does has submitted their name.  Is this accurate?


   Bottom line, with my boggled brain, if we were to vote today, I would
   have to vote against because I don't understand what I'm voting for, or
   I would have to abstain for the same reason.
