It seems to me that the solution may be not in specifying a '6-month requirement', but having policy language which allows for it when too few volunteers step forward.

SC members with greater knowledge of and longer experience with ASP's workings has obvious advantages. On the other hand, a SC filled with folks with only 6 months of ASP service experience could certainly bring serious group problems. 

Possible language?:

"ASP suggests that candidates for Steering Committee positions have a minimum of 1 year of ASP service experience though resumes will be accepted from Business Meeting members with at least 6 months of ASP service."

We'd be continuing to encourage more experienced candidates while opening the door for others. As others have said, the BM's questions and the candidates' resumes and answers should allow us to make informed decisions.

If this still doesn't result in full SC's we could later add language which would consider non-ASP Al-Anon service experience as well.
