[Businessmtg] Motion

Hi folks,
Yes, that was a typo. Duh & UGH!
FYI, while I believe that Parliamentary Procedure under Robert's Rules of
Order normally requires the Mover and the Seconder to agree with an
amendment to a motion, or a withdrawal of the original motion, we have long
practiced a policy here at ASP that is more Al-Anon in nature. That is, we
believe that once a motion has been made and seconded, the motion belongs to
the Group, not the Maker and Seconder. In other words, once a motion has
been seconded, the Maker and Seconder no longer have any more control over
the motion than anyone else in the Group; the Group may amend a motion as it
sees fit.
Additionally, we do not require that amendments to a motion pass a formal
approval process before the amendment is made. In other words, the Chair of
the Business Meeting may approve amendments on the fly, based on her
assessment of their value and apparent acceptance of the members of the
Business Meeting, even if that apparent acceptance is based on only a few
members.
The bottom line is that my understanding is that the motion has been
properly amended, and now reads as Lynne stated:
"I move that routine ASP Business Meetings be held on a quarterly basis
starting in January 2024. Should the need for a special Business Meeting
that cannot wait for the next regularly scheduled Business Meeting, the
Steering Committee may elect by a simple majority, to hold a Special
Business Meeting for the sole purpose of addressing said single special
need. Members of the Steering Committee are not required to present their
usual staff reports at Special Business Meetings unless a specific staff
report is directly related to the issue of the Special Business Meeting."
Hugs,
Steve

Hi Missy,
I think that was a typo and one I didn't notice, so thanks for pointing that
out! We do want this to take effect in January 2024! I would like to amend
the motion so that it would read:
"I move that routine ASP Business Meetings be held on a quarterly basis
starting in January 2024. Should the need for a special Business Meeting
that cannot wait for the next regularly scheduled Business Meeting, the
Steering Committee may elect by a simple majority, to hold a Special
Business Meeting for the sole purpose of addressing said single special
need. Members of the Steering Committee are not required to present their
usual staff reports at Special Business Meetings unless a specific staff
report is directly related to the issue of the Special Business Meeting."
Hugs,
Lynne
