We hope you stick around.A. Yes, the learning curve in any new activity is usually steep. Al-Anon service beyond the group level is no different. B. We don't know for certain that the GEA leadership plan is for the decision to be binary- accept the Task Force recommendations or start over. That is what I heard from the GR of another meeting. It could be accurate, or it could be the noise in her head. I sincerely hope that is NOT the plan. Anne will find out at the Assembly next Saturday. Frankly, if it does turn out to be true that the GRs are given a choice of just (a) vote FOR the Task Force recommendation, or (b) vote AGAINST the Task Force recommendation WITHOUT the opportunity for the GRs to use the KBDM process in the process of DEVELOPING the decision, then I believe that we have a real problem in the GEA. C. Voting or not voting. Please understand that "not voting" is the same thing as "voting NO" at ASP. How is that? Here at ASP, we require that a motion must receive a 2/3 majority AFFIRMATIVE vote of every member attending the Business Meeting. Why do we do this? Simple. Unlike many other organizations, in Al-Anon we strive for "substantial unanimity" in our "informed group conscience". While we aren't always successful, we try to avoid a culture of winning vs losing. The gist of it is that we require "substantial unanimity" of everyone in the meeting for a motion to pass. In other words, if an idea does not have the support of "substantial unanimity" of everyone in the room, then the idea is not good enough for ASP. Example: this month we have 18 members in the Business Meeting. In order for a motion to pass and become an ASP group conscience, a minimum of 12 members must vote FOR the motion. If 11 members vote FOR, 2 vote AGAINST, 2 ABSTAIN, and 3 DID NOT VOTE, the motion fails. I am clear however that I do not feel able to vote on these proposals at this stage.I don't really understand why it has to be a binary all or nothing decision. I appreciate the effort that has gone into the proposals and that they are a start I do not understand why though they have to be accepted or the whole proposal falls and the process starts again. Maybe I don't understand the processes properly and I am happy to be corrected but isn't it possible to feed back any concerns and the proposals be reconsidered to take these into account? Otherwise it could well become either an endless procedure which never achieves an outcome by constantly starting over or proposals are accepted despite deep reservations. That's just how I see it from my reading so far Rebecca Sent from my Galaxy ____________________________ To Unsubscribe, go to: http://www.asp-afg.org/mailman/listinfo/aspThe ASP web site with all kinds of info for ASP members is http://asp-afg.org/members/ For assistance with other ASP issues, contact Lynne, the List Administrator of ASP, at lynne at asp-afg.org____________________________To Unsubscribe, go to: http://www.asp-afg.org/mailman/listinfo/aspThe ASP web site with all kinds of info for ASP members is http://asp-afg.org/members/For assistance with other ASP issues, contact Lynne, the List Administrator of ASP, at lynne at asp-afg.org
