Hi Mary,

I'm not sure how this could work. . .
We have 2 At-Large service positions on the Steering Committee.  
While it is true that unlike the other positions on the Steering Committee, the At-Large positions and the Alternate GR positions do not have regular service duties supporting the routine operation of ASP making those positions similar, the Alternate GR position is unique in other ways from the At-Large positions.
Considering the lack of routine duties supporting combining one specific At-Large position with the Alternate GR position, I believe that the members need to understand that specific At Large position is also the Alternate GR position, or that the Alternate GR position is also one of the At-Large positions, depending on how you prefer looking at it.  
While I am OK with assigning one of the At Large positions, I believe that it would be both a mistake and complicated to generally assume that the At-Large position is also the Alternate GR.  Example: Susie Q. & Bella T. are elected At-Large in January - which one is the Alternate GR?  What if Susie Q. is elected in January, and Bella T. is elected in March?  Does that mean that Bella T. automatically becomes the Alternate GR when Susie Q. rotates out?  And what happens when the GR rotates early, leaving the position vacant?  The Alternate GR becomes the GR, so in this situation, we'd have musical At-Large people rotating through the GR position without any election by the group.  ☹
Also, the Alternate GR position is a 3-year position just like the GR position, but our At-Large positions on the SC have been just 6-months.  If Susie Q. is elected At-Large in January and as a result is serving as the Alternate GR, then the Alternate GR position is NOT vacant, so if Bella T. comes along in March and is interested in serving as the Alternate GR, she can't because that position is currently filled by Susie Q.
