Biz-Pals,
I first want to comment on the urgent need to fill the webmaster
position from my angle. Being a past ASP Treasurer and Steering Comm.
member I have an interest in our income, expenses, and distribution
of funds. For many months (and nearly this entire year) I have looked
for our current financial info, but it has not been posted because
- no webmaster to update the site . So I can't get the information
I seek. Maybe no biggy to many, but important to me. ASP has always
been a transparent outfit and this lack of updates gives the appearance
of inattention. I might add that financial transparency is particularly
important for an on-line meeting where fraud can be so easy.
Now, about the manner and tone of the business shares. Business meetings
are different than topic meetings. People are going to have vastly
different opinions, points of view, and takes on the application of
Al-Anon Principles to make their points. Sometimes it seems downright
hostile - especially for those of us who have a history with alcoholics
acting or speaking to us in anger. Feelings get hurt. Egos bruised.
I, myself, big boy pants and all, have been stung a time or two. It's
tempting to revert to old behaviors - to "quit the game and take my ball
and go home." That's even okay. But it's also a very good opportunity to
change behavior and try this new way: we may disagree, we may be hurt,
but that doesn't mean that we have to submit to our feelings when they
are taking us down the path of disengaging.
I think it's worth mentioning that it is normal within Al-Anon, when
a member is serving in some service positions, that a held position
has to be vacated when a higher service position is taken. There's a long
history of not taking over multiple positions because it keeps others
who are willing to serve from being able to do so. It also encourages
dominance in those who seek personal power within the fellowship. If
you've never run into an old-time, dominating Al-Anon count yourself
as lucky.
Most of all, if you are nudged into service - either by others, your
conscience, or by your Higher Power - I think it's good Al-Anon thinking
to just do it.
I'd love to see two or more members' names on a ballot for this and
all future ASP service positions. Being willing to serve is personal
growth at its finest.
Hugs,
Jerry
