Subject: Newmember Welcoming Emails
First, keeping it simple for me, I would like to say I love Jerry's idea of a specific newcomer's meeting.
Having given my reponse in that regard, I would like to give my opinionS in others........
1. The topic seems to be the overwhelming welcomes newcomers receive.
Personally, I have never felt the need to send individual welcomes to newcomers in ASP as they are introduced.
They have been welcomed by the Greeter, given the overall picture from the website, and I feel no need to add to
that.
2. Sometimes people who come through our doors are not ready and they drop out.
This happens in f2f meetings and it happens online. There is no way we can possibly address each person's
issue or make it "perfect" for them.
When they are ready, they will come, they will stay, they will listen and learn. The program is here, stable, and
ever available to all.
3. My first meeting had well over 100 people present. It was the perfect place for me to hide. But, I heard and I learned.
4. When I branched out to a smaller meeting, it was in a treatment center, and newcomers went to a separate table for a
certain amount of meeetings. I kept hearing laughter and noise from the other tables and I wanted to go there - to have what they had - I wanted to graduate to the "big people's table."
5. When I finally got the courage to go to a meeting in my hometown, even after a year in the program, I was treated as a newcomer. That meeting had the policy to take newcomers aside, to a separate room, for their first 3 meetings. One or two
volunteer "oldtimers" went with them, encouraged them and told them about Al-Anon. It was wonderful.
I visualize Jerry's suggestion to work similarly to this.
6. Regarding comments regarding the number of daily shares and how the ESH accumulates in dozens or even hundreds of emails, my smart mouth REaction is that every device has a delete key.
In a more courteous manner, I would like to say that I would like not to be deprived of someone's share due to limiting of responses when I can take what I like and leave the rest by making my own choices.
Thank you for listening.
Linda
