Hi ASPers,
The group conscience regarding how we handle controversial issues is quite
clear.
The policy states that FULL discussion of the topic continues in Month 3
(second meeting) and may be extended to following month(s).
In other words, IF a legitimate motion was made today, discussion would
continue through the next Business Meeting and possibly meetings after that.
Why such an ordeal? Simple. It is designed to avoid scenarios where some
members are trying to force a solution.
The Al-Anon Opening says:
"Our thinking becomes distorted by trying to force solutions, and we become
irritable and unreasonable without knowing it."
Please note the following ASP Policy at
http://asp-afg.org/members/business-meeting/
Major or Controversial Issues
Issues which would result in a major change to ASP or are controversial in
nature will have a delayed discussion and voting procedure:
Month 1: Announcement of topic followed by truncated discussion to
illuminate issues. Discussion limited to 1 week.
Month 3: Full discussion of topic. Discussion may be extended to following
month(s) as needed.
Month 5+: Voting on motion.
It is important to understand that this policy is part of our general
Business Meeting policy. As such, it applies regardless of whether we are
using the KBDM process or the more traditional Parliamentary procedure.
There is no latitude regarding following this policy - it must be followed
any time there is controversy regarding an issue. It is obvious that this
issue is controversial. In fact, it is probably the most controversial issue
that ASP has ever faced.
Hugs,
Steve
