[Businessmtg] Suggest a Different Motion in Search of Unity

Robert's Rules only require that the person who made the motion makes a request withdraw or amend it. It would not need passed before amendment when requested by the originator.

Robert's Rules:

"In a deliberative assembly, the motion to request for permission to withdraw or modify a motion is made if the maker of the motion wishes to withdraw or change it after it has been stated by the chair." (Wikipedia)

It would require a second, but the original seconder has no inherent right to block the withdrawal or amended motion.

Jane would have to make the request under our circumstances. [In an in-person body, another could make the request of the original maker had the floor. In such a case no second would be necessary.] No debate permitted. Majority vote required to allow withdrawal or modification.

(There is a reason I don't love Robert's Rules.)

If Jane can see her way to withdrawing this motion and submitting a new motion such as I suggested, or to amend her motion similarly we may be able to heal this wound.

Thank you Jerry, it does sound like a reasonable solution. However, the existing motion can only be withdrawn by Jane and Barbara.

To amend the existing motion on the table, this motion would first have to be passed prior to amending it.
