Thanks BJ for your input and insight and Karen and Beverly -- to answer
some of your questions: This is what I encountered.
When I volunteered for the position, I was lead to believe that by us
both going to our respective Wells Fargo banks I could just present my
letter of election to the position and my ID and sign signature cards to
take over the account (or be added to it). My bank branch was fine
with adding me to the account, however the branch from the previous
treasurer was not. I now understand why not. The account is a
personal business account for ASP which is linked to Melanie's personal
account so not as to incur fees. The previous treasurer had to apply
for an EIN in her state of residence under the name A Serenity Place in
order to open this account.
I was told in order for me to open such an account, I would have to do
the same thing. Not only would I would have to provide my SSN but more
importantly apply for an EIN in the State of WA under the name ASP. I
would need to do this using my home address, not a PO Box and it would
be linked to me personally. While I expect to link my name to the
account, my anonymity is an issue and I do NOT want, nor was I ever told
before running for the office that this was a requirement that I
personally had to link ASP as a business to my personal taxes as a
business.
18 months into the position, Melanie continues to hold the bank
account in her name. Our PayPal account is linked to this account and
I have full access to the PayPal account. I can pay bills from the
PayPal account. While having access to the bank account would make my
life easier in that I would be able to make deposits on my mobile app vs
driving to a WF Bank to deposit checks, we made it work! I can do my
job. I do however have to wait for Melanie to electronically send me a
copy of each monthly bank statement, which she does every month
faithfully.
I not only checked with the local branches of the nationwide banks, I
checked with small local banks as well as credit unions. Each and
every one told me the same thing, opening the bank account is not the
issue, applying for an EIN and linking ASP to my SSN is an issue.
I hope this answers any questions you may have. If there are any
others or if I have missed any please feel free to reach out again!
Hugs,
In service,
Jennifer
