Hello!
I’ve given some thought to the follow-up questions and my answers are below:
From Jeanette K
Two questions came to mind as I was reading the questions and responses
from others. You acknowledged that communication via email can be
challenging because of tone, etc. I’m wondering what your communication
style is and how you will communicate in a situation where tone may be
misunderstood?
Also, this is my 3rd Business Meeting so I’m still really new to the
process. The last 2 meetings I attended I noticed topics/concerns being
raised by Business Meeting members. How will you represent the members of
the recovery meeting in the Business Meeting & Steering Committee?
My answers:
I’d like to think my communication style is concise and based on data - at work I think I achieve that more than in personal communications. For me, the web master position is more “work related” than “personal” so I would expect to tend more toward sharing and summarizing facts. I’m not quite sure that’s a “style” necessarily. In person I laugh *a lot* so in my personal emails I tend to use smiley-face emojis and ‘LOL’ a lot because that’s how I talk. As for tone - that’s really a tough one, because at some point,I think that ‘tone’ is a shared responsibility between the writer and the reader. Certainly, if I start with “OMG! I can’t even *believe* that (whatever)!! I think we should do x, y and z right this very second!” That’s very different from “(whatever) occurred and our solutions include x, y and z, which should be implemented in the next 2 days” I do try to subscribe to the ‘say it once, 10 words or less”. (Although I up it to 25 words LOL) which helps me remove the drama from what I am saying - or writing. Also, I tend not to respond to emails immediately to give me some distance on my interpretation of tone.
How will I represent members of the recovery meeting? At this point I think that my contribution will be more about how the website is used by our members - if we can see that, for example, no one ever clicks on a particular link or visits a particular page, then maybe as a group we need to evaluate the page or make it more prominent or whatever. Also, if anyone writes in with concerns about the web site then of course I would bring that in as well.

Now just to recap and confirm with you, and to keep it simple in my mind, changes you would make on your own would be limited to “fixes for broken links, spelling errors”, and spelling errors do not include whole sentence changes, right? Also as Jerry mentioned “primary website maintenance and upkeep responsibilities”.
What is meant when saying “content and placement”?
My answers:
I think I will answer the second question first. To me, ‘content and placement’ means the information (content) conveyed on the website and how that information is displayed (placement).
To come back to the first question - I feel a bit like I’m painting myself into a corner and I don’t want to do that. I don’t want to say that fixes on my own only include broken links and spelling errors - but then if I add a period to an end of a sentence (for example) have that not be on the list of things I could do on my own - and have that be an issue. I think those types of things fall under primary website maintenance and upkeep. To me, changing a sentence is a content change, not an upkeep change. To me, ‘upkeep’ or 'maintenance’ does not change the information conveyed, how that information is worded, or where it is on the page. If or when I make any corrections I will likely keep a list which I can share at the business meeting.
Please let me know if there are more questions - I’m happy to answer them.
Anne
