Hi guys, thanks for everyone’s input. It’s really interesting to get all this info, but helpful at the same time.
Have you guys ever thought of creating new positions that require lesser time? For example I get probably 2-5 emails a day personally from newcomers asking questions. Or they may even write the group. What if we lower the greeters to 6 months (or keep it how it is) and then add like a “welcoming committee” and have say, 4 or 5 people that answer questions and help. That way our greeters aren’t so busy and swamped.
I know when I joined it was probably 2 days until I heard back from my greeter - but yet I was already signed up and receiving emails. Talk about confusion! But if our greeters are so busy that explains why. Most groups you are welcomed within a few hours. Definitely over night or by the next day. (Taking into considerations that we have lives and also different time zones.)
It doesn’t take but maybe a few weeks to figure out how to maneuver the website, so I believe a “newcomer” with 3 or so months could do that no problem. So the greeter could write the newcomer and introduce the person to the group and then have a rotation and say something like “Angie is part of our welcoming committee, if you need any help or have any questions please write her” - with her email address attached. Maybe the welcoming committee could also look through the main list and watch for emails like that asking questions.
I know that’s a whole other process and may seem like more work. But if everyone is so dead set on keeping the time requirement the same you also have to keep in mind like Jerry said, our group needs help. So if we have more people willing to help out, but aren’t wanting to change the requirements for them - create something that would help everyone involved.
Just my opinion. Thanks for letting me share!
Anna
