[Businessmtg] Daily Chair Requirements

What I'm hearing from some members doesn't make sense to me.
Jerry, talked about giving the Secretary the discretion to reduce the
participation requirement for our Daily Chairs. I seem to recall that the
need for this is actually rare, something like only once in the last
several years. If that's true, then it hardly seems like something we need
to do.
Now, I'm hearing from two members that say they were turned down when they
volunteered to serve as a Daily Chair, but not because they didn't have
enough time in ASP. They were turned down because the Secretary had
already received more than enough volunteers. That supports the idea that
we don't need to give the Secretary the discretion to reduce the
participation requirement.
In fact, that really suggests that more often than not, we have more than
enough volunteers, so why would we need to lower the requirement?
Besides, in my experience Al-Anons are people pleasers. It seems to me
that the real reason to give the Secretary the discretion to lower the
requirement is to let the Secretary please those that haven't been in ASP
long enough yet. If we allow the Secretary discretion to lower the
requirement, why would Secretary bother saying no to someone with less than
6 months in ASP? It would be so much easier to say yes.
My experience also tells me that we created these participation
requirements for a reason, a good reason. I for one, don't agree with the
idea that new members should be thrust into leadership positions. Or
allowed to volunteer.
I also understand that longtime members of Al-Anon that come to ASP
recently may have a firm understanding of Al-Anon, but no understanding of
ASP and how ASP works. I've heard that since they already know about
Al-Anon, they don't read the instructions on how ASP works. I thought the
goal of having participation requirements was to help ensure that our Daily
Chairs lead our meetings the "ASP way". That won't happen if we allow
members that are too new to understand and follow the directions, or too
set in their ways to follow the ASP directions.
