Apologies, Lynne, for taking so long to reply to your questions.
~ Was this recent or years ago?
Multiple times over the last 1-1/2 to 2 years.
~ How many times in the last 5 years?
I can only speak to the period during which I filled the Secretary duties in addition to my LA responsibilities. Without digging out my notes I believe there may have been three consecutive cycles within the last two years where this "problem" occurred. I don't recall hearing much about difficulties filling these positions in prior years, but since the situation did show up, whatever the cause, I though/think there should be some thought given to this should it come up again.

Thank you Jerry for bring up this topic and explaining the background for why it's necessary to discuss. I understand this was your experience. Was this recent or years ago? Do you (or Steve or anyone) know how many times has this happened in the last 5 years? I'm just trying to get an understanding of how often this is an issue or if you had a particularly unlucky patch as secretary.
I find myself being swayed by the arguments for and against the secretary having the discretion to allow someone who might have slightly less than 6 months, but lots of other Al Anon experience, to be a daily chair. I think having the data on how many times this has been an issue would help me with a decision.
I was surprised when Steve mentioned at the last business meeting - and Anna mentioned today - that when he put out the last call for chairs only 8 people responded. Yes, it was easy to fill, even when someone backed out, but it seems like it's cutting it rather close considering the size of ASP. What is the process when there aren't enough people who volunteer? Does the secretary send out multiple emails to ASP to recruit?
Also, something to consider is that this doesn't yet reflect the increased membership that has taken place since the pandemic with people like myself, who will meet the 6 month requirement next time there is a call for chairs. And of course we have no idea how long the pandemic will last and the membership will be higher than it was in the past. But something to consider.
Thank,
Lynne
