Hi ASPers,
Some have asked questions about how often it occurs that there might be a need for the Secretary to have some discretion regarding the requirement for 6-months participation in ASP to serve as a Daily Chair. What I’ve seen in response has run the gamut from “rare” to “multiple times” and “three consecutive cycles”.
A quick tour of the archives for the last 5 years provided the following dates that the Secretary posted a request for volunteers to serve as a Daily Chair.
2016 Jan-Jun (Laura)
First Call Dec 22, 2015 1 filled
Second Call Dec 26, 2015 Filled
2016 Jul-Dec (Laura)
First Call Jun 2, 2016 Filled
Second Call None
2017 Jan-Jun (Laura)
First Call Dec 3 3 filled
Second Call Dec 10
2017 Jul-Dec (Sandie)
First Call Jun 2, 2017 5 filled
Second Call Jun 9, 2017
2018 Jan-Jun (Kristen)
First Call Dec 8, 2017
Second Call Dec 18, 2017
2018 Jul-Dec (Kristen)
First Call Jun 12, 2018
Second Call Jun 17, 2018
2019 Jan-Jun (Jerry)
First Call Dec 19, 2018 Filled
Second Call Dec 29, 2018 See note
[Note: 2 withdrew at last minute, filled immediately with 2nd call]
2019 Jul-Dec (Jerry)
First Call Jun 4, 2019 5 filled
Second Call Jun 23, 2019
2020 Jan-Jun (Beverly)
First Call Dec 4, 2019 Filled on Dec 6th
Second Call None
2020 Jan-Jun (Steve)
First Call May 24, 2020 Filled
Second Call None
As you can see for the 10 cycles in the last 5 years:
A. 4 were filled on the first call.
B. The other 6 were filled on the 2nd call.
C. There has been no 3rd call.
D. The First Call was sent out approx. 3 weeks into the month twice.
Susie’s suggestion for the Secretary to go to the Steering Committee seemed to be well received. However, Susie’s suggestion required a 3rd call before the Secretary could approach to the Steering Committee for discretion in allowing members with less than 6 months. Since there is no history of needing a 3rd, it follows that there is no problem that needs to be fixed.
In other words, the ‘problem’ is beyond rare. It really doesn’t exist. If the Secretary feels that having to send out a second message to fill the slots is a problem, then I’d suggest they call their sponsor. 😊
On a related note, some Secretaries have expanded on the 7 Daily Chairs and recruited “alternates” or “backups”. I have a problem with this. The problem is that those Secretaries have created de facto service positions without going through the group conscience process. This is especially important considering that serving as a Greeter is qualifying service to serve on the Steering Committee. If serving as a Daily Chair is qualifying service, that suggests that serving as an alternate Daily Chair also qualifies. Besides, having “backups” sends a message to the Daily Chairs that they can skip a day and its OK, because someone else will pick up the slack.
The way it’s worked is simple – if a Daily Chair isn’t going to be available, then they either draft their share early and send it to the Secretary for posting on the proper day, OR the Secretary covers that day with their own share. Same thing if a Daily Chair quits early; the Secretary covers the slot until they can recruit a new Daily Chair.
Love and SERENITY,
Steve
