[Businessmtg] Group Rep

Hi everyone,

I have been following the discussion up to now, but now I am confused. The last little bit of discussion has been on what people think qualifications for the new GR rep should be. My question is this -is this discussion suggesting formal requirements for the new GR rep above and beyond the current criteria? Which as I understand them are just that they are eligible to be elected to the steering committee? But to be eligible, a member has to have served for one year as either a greeter or daily chair. And to qualify for those positions, a member has to have been at ASP for 6 months? AND the member has to attend the business meeting since this is not advertised in the recovery meeting? So someone has to have been at ASP for at least 18 months and be committed to ASP enough to attend business meetings? And then volunteer to commit to a brand new 3 year position?

If all that is correct, then even if we have 1000 members, that seems to be a small pool of people that would be eligible. I don’t see the value in putting any further conditions on service for this GR rep. And wouldn’t want to discourage anyone eligible from volunteering just because they don’t have more experience at higher levels of Al anon service. If someone meets the eligibility requirements, I think they are more than qualified to represent ASP’s best interests as the electronic area details are ironed out. Plus, they will be reporting regularly to the steering committee and the business meeting and there seem to be a lot of people in those places that could offer support IF the GR rep needs it. I’ve only been here through 2 elections of officers, but both had only one volunteer. Which worked out perfectly. But, it seems like we should be more worried that no one will volunteer rather than putting any more limits in place. Just my thoughts.

Hugs,
Lynne

Remember, telephone meetings and all other formats will be included so email groups need to be well represented.

The standard term for a Group Rep is indeed 3 years, but groups are also empowered to elect a representative at the last minute and even for the sole attendance and vote at specific meetings or Assemblies. As long as the Group elects that person, they have voice and vote while representing the Group.
