Hi Anna,
Please refer to my response to Anne K. for a somewhat in-depth answer to your question why about the Founder positions at ASP.
In response to your comment that the Founders are holding more than one service position, this is not true. Both Anne and I hold the position of Founder at ASP. We do not hold the position of Secretary or Treasurer - we are merely performing the duties of those positions while they are vacant. If and when, the members of ASP elect a new Secretary or Treasurer, then that members will become the new Secretary or Treasurer immediately and we will no longer perform those duties.
There are two alternatives available within ASP policy:
1. The List Administrator is the primary service position in ASP. Unlike the other elected positions on the Steering Committee, there are no defined limits on the duties of the List Administrator, therefore the ultimate responsibility for the entire operation of ASP falls on the List Administrator. Two List Administrators before you found themselves performing the duties of vacant positions.
2. The duties of the vacant position can simply be ignored and not performed. In this case, the Secretary's duty of being the Chair does fall onto the List Administrator per instructions on the website. However, the other duties of the Secretary, namely managing the rotation of our Daily Chairs would simply not be done and we would have no Daily Chairs after June. Likewise, the duties of the Treasurer would fall by the wayside, there would be no Seventh Tradition or management of our finances. Within a few months, there would be insufficient funds to pay for the server and ASP would go dark.
Love and SERENITY,
Steve

Subject: [Businessmtg] Question on ByLaws
I also have a question in regards to :
“ b. Founders
i. Founders are the original Founders of ASP, or the two (2) most senior members of ASP in terms of continuous membership in ASP.
ii. Founders serve for Life or as long a member of ASP.
iii. Service as a Founder is primarily as an advisor and voice of experience to the Steering Committee and Business Meeting.
iv. The Steering Committee may
ask Founder(s) to perform service to ASP, including performing the duties of any vacancy on the Steering Committee.”
*****Per tradition 2, we are to not “govern”, which is why positions rotate. To have the same member remain in the position doesn’t seem very rotating to me. Also the “most senior” statement is to me implying because they have the most time within the group they get to “serve for life”, “serve as an advisor and voice of experience”, and with the “performing the duties of any vacancy on the Steering Committee” that means a member would be holding more then one position at a time. Which, is currently happening.
Our website, under “founding statements and policies #7 states” : “
1. Dominance is a constant threat to any Al-Anon meeting. No one person may hold more than one service job at a time or hold consecutive terms at A Serenity Place.”
I would like to understand more about why founders don’t have to follow the guidelines set forth for the remaining members of ASP.
Thanks,
Anna
