Follow up with details from the technical support at our server:
The short version is that we either have archives or we don't. There is
no option to have them for a certain period of time and then delete
them.
"Turning off the archive option will not physically delete the archives.
It will only stop future messages going into the archives. There is no
way for you to reset the archives. We would have to delete all the
archives and start with a new archive.
Unfortunately there is no way to schedule deletion of archives older
than 30 days. The reason are all the various links etc which need to be
updated. The actual archive is stored in a single file. You would have
to write some code to write that single file, remove all messages which
are older than 30 days and then re-generate all the archive files from
scratch.
Therefore resetting the archive to a blank state is no problem. We can
do that with one command."
