Thanks so much to everyone who has commented. I feel like I'm starting to
understand. This is what I've heard:
Reasons for continuing to archive shares:
--The server is all or nothing. Keeping shares for a specified time would
be difficult, so we keep them all forever.
--WSO doesn't honor anonymity 100% of the time
--Some members use the archives because of problems with their personal
email programs.
--Some members use the archives because 30-40 emails a day isn't enough for
them.
--The List Administrator uses the archives to help resolve issues that come
up in the recovery meeting.
--A motion was previously proposed to delete the archive and it was
defeated.
On the other hand, the only argument for no longer maintaining the archive
is that it violates the principle of anonymity. That makes some members
feel less safe in our meeting.
It's taken me some time to sort through the pros and cons here. Now that I
have had time to think it through, I think we should discontinue the
archive and delete previous shares. While it does seem to have some
limited usefulness, I don't think that outweighs the concerns about
anonymity and safety.
Since some members do use the archive, I would like to see us notify the
recovery meeting in advance so they can make other arrangements.
