[Businessmtg] Question about Number of Members in ASP

Actually, Steve, your assessment of what I prefer has nothing at all to do with what I think of purging. I'll thank you to stop putting words in my mouth which originate with you. Making these types of false accusations is no way to foster good will let alone unity. I reject your notion completely.

The fact is that our topic emails and shares do go out to 2,808 registered ASP members. All of them. 2,808 souls. Once in a while we'll get a bounce because an address is no longer active and it gets removed, but I stress this is a rarity. Somewhere out there each member has a computer or devise which is receiving all ASP emails.

Under your "Inflated" theory these members ought to have their membership revoked if they don't respond in a timely fashion to an administrative announcement. Without being certain of whether these members are using ASP for their personal recovery or not you would remove them simply because of a failure to respond. Some open door that is.

I highly prefer "Inclusive" over your draconian choice of purging. If someone wishes to only read our shares, but not actively participate - I say Include them! If someone chooses to let thousands of shares pile up in their computer for possible future use as they see fit - I say include them! If we have no certainty whether there is someone on the receiving end of our recovery materials, why actively move to blindly exclude them? Are we not both open to recovery AND outreach, or are we to be tightly exclusive? Shut 'em out!? Not for me.

Placing the burden on members to reply - or else - is not appealing to me. Since when does Al-Anon place attendance requirements upon people who choose to join this fellowship? Do we shut the door on someone who shows up after an absence of a year or two? No, the burden is on us to learn to accept the choices of others. To welcome, not exclude.

So, Steve, instead of telling members of this Business Meeting what I prefer I suggest you let me speak for myself, because you've got me pegged all wrong. Way, way wrong.

Jerry

Thanks for raising this question Sarah.

Yes and no.

Yes, historically the List Owner (me) and subsequent List Administrators have periodically purged the list of inactive email addresses. This was usually done every year or two, which resulted in the list being trimmed from 700-1000 down to 200+.

The last time this was done was early during the term of the previous List Administrator nearly 4 years ago.

As a result, the current 2,808 that Jerry just quoted is significantly inflated with inactive members compared to the historical numbers from the past. I have suggested and requested that the List Administrator conduct another purge, however he has choosen not to do so and prefers the inflated list.

Hugs,
Steve

I’m not sure this is relevant, but since our old timers have raised the
subject about number of people in ASP, is the member list ever purged based
on non-activity? And if so, when was the last time?

I‘m leaning toward the one year requirement due to the “revolving door” of
members in ASP.

Hugs, Sarah
