Hi everyone,
I am in agreement with Jerry's proposal below:
"I propose that the Secretary, or the Steering Committee, be permitted to
allow otherwise qualified Al-Anon members to fill vacant Topic Chair
service positions when no qualified ASP member has volunteered to fill
them. [SC notification required.]"
As Margaret G has pointed out, Concept 3 says the right of decision makes
effective leadership possible. The Secretary and Steering Committee are
trusted servants, and need leeway to do what allows them to serve in those
positions well. Even if it's a rare situation where we don't get
sufficient volunteers or a chair drops out before their rotation is
finished, we don't have to let those rare situations become an added stress
to our other trusted servants who end up having to carry more than
necessary.
I also think that how we handle filling the Topic Chair positions has a
domino effect on how easy or hard it becomes to fill other service
positions that require more service experience to qualify and/or more time
to carry out. Topic Chair is one of the routes to qualifying for other
service positions, so the more we can do to get more topic chairs serving,
the better for ASP. ASP can't do what other f2f groups I've been in can
do: if the chairperson doesn't show up, we can just look around the room
and ask if someone else would be willing to step up today. Yet we do need
a daily topic to keep going. If giving the Secretary or SC more leeway when
we have insufficient service volunteers keeps their load a bit lighter,
then I'm in favor of doing it.
HUGS (Helping Us Gain Serenity), Linda
