[Businessmtg] Question to SC

Hi folks,

I'll try to answer Marilyn's question "Is the intent of this to put out a
general call to the recovery meeting stating that members who don't meet the
current requirements may apply and be screened by the SC case by case?
Jerry's recent emai brought to my attention that this could also be
interpreted as the SC reaching out to individuals they favor and asking them
to apply. This could result in the SC cherry-picking members."
First, please understand that I can't speak for the others on the Steering
Committee, nor do I speak for the SC. The List Administrator (Lynne) is the
Chair of the SC, and therefore the sole person that speaks for the SC.
However, I can speak about how *I* envision this working.
I certainly expect that *we* will broadcast a request for volunteers to the
recovery meeting. By *we*, I don't really know whose desk this will be sent
out from. The List Administrator? The Secretary? The Founders? Perhaps
the Steering Committee? That's an administrative detail that *we* will
discuss and decide on.
How will the broadcast request be worded? I don't know. That is another
decision to be made by the SC as a whole. Will it include language regarding
current requirements, the exceptions, the process, etc.? Again, I can't say
how it will be worded. My hunch is that we will word it very carefully to
be as inclusive and positive and encouraging as we can simply because that
works better and the alternative sucks.
Will we reach out to individuals? There is little doubt in my mind that
each of us will reach out to individuals that we've had positive experience
with in ASP. Likewise, there are also members that we have had negative
experiences with. Is this favoritism? No, it's paying respect to our
experience with individuals. The members that we might reach out to are
merely individuals that have caught the attention of one or more of us as
potential SC members. Encouraging members that we have worked with in the
past on some level - even if it is only several exchanges of emails
involving Q&A on ASP issues - is how we start the process of getting members
to serve in Al-Anon.
Love and SERENITY,
Steve

Subject: [Businessmtg] Question to SC

Hi all,

I have one question for the SC regarding the current motion.

"That the Steering Committee (SC) is authorized to solicit volunteers for
service on the SC,"

Is the intent of this to put out a general call to the recovery meeting
stating that members who don't meet the current requirements may apply and
be screened by the SC case by case? Jerry's recent emai brought to my
attention that this could also be interpreted as the SC reaching out to
individuals they favor and asking them to apply. This could result in the SC
cherry-picking members.

I don't believe this is the intent of our current SC, nor that our SC plans
to "pack" the SC. I do think that for clarity, this part of the motion
could be reworded.

"That the SC is authorized to inform the general meeting of the opportunity
to apply for service on the SC without having one year's prior service."

My insomnia means I'm not thinking at my best right now, so perhaps I'm
nit-picking a small detail. If I'm mistaken, and the majority feel the
current wording is acceptable, I'm willing to accept that.

I support the remaining points of the current motion.

Thanks,
Marilyn
